Country-Style Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons butter or bacon grease

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk

Salt, to taste

Ground black pepper, to taste

Optional: a pinch of cayenne pepper or dried herbs for added flavor

Instructions:

Melt the Fat: In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter or bacon grease over medium heat.

Make the Roux: Add the flour to the melted fat. Stir constantly with a whisk or wooden spoon, cooking the mixture for about 2 minutes until it achieves a light brown color.

Gradually Add Milk: Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Keep whisking until the mixture is smooth.

Season the Gravy: Add salt and ground black pepper to taste. For extra flavor, you can also incorporate a pinch of cayenne pepper or your choice of dried herbs.

Simmer to Thicken: Continue to cook the gravy, stirring frequently, until it thickens to your desired consistency. This typically takes about 5 to 10 minutes.

Adjust and Serve: Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Serve the gravy hot with your favorite dishes such as biscuits, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, or over breakfast items.

Notes:

Seasoning is Key: Adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Black pepper is crucial for achieving that classic country gravy flavor.

Consistency Adjustments: You can modify the thickness by adjusting the amount of milk. Add more for a thinner gravy, less for a thicker consistency.

Flavor Enhancements: For additional flavor, consider incorporating garlic powder, onion powder, or herbs like thyme.

Storing and Reheating: Store in an airtight container in the fridge. When reheating, do so slowly, stirring frequently.
