If You’re Not Using This Microwave Button, You’re Missing Out! Start Today—Here’s Why

Microwaves have been a kitchen staple for decades, making our lives easier and saving time. But did you know there’s a button on your microwave that many of us overlook—and it could revolutionize the way you cook and reheat food? At 60 years old, I just discovered it myself, and I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without using it. Let me tell you about this hidden gem: the “Power Level” button.

What Is the Power Level Button?

Most of us use our microwave at full power—pressing a time and hitting “Start.” But the power level button allows you to adjust the intensity of the microwave’s energy. Instead of blasting your food with 100% power, you can choose levels between 10% and 90%. This simple adjustment can make all the difference in reheating leftovers, defrosting, and even cooking certain dishes.

Why This Button Matters

Here’s what makes the power level button so special:

  1. Better Cooking Results
High power is great for heating quickly, but it often leads to uneven results—scalding edges and cold centers. By lowering the power level, you allow the heat to distribute more evenly, preventing overcooking and undercooking.

  2. Perfect Defrosting
The defrost setting on most microwaves is just a preset lower power level. Using the power level button manually (around 30%-50%) gives you better control and ensures meats and frozen foods defrost evenly without partially cooking.

  3. Delicate Foods Stay Intact
Foods like custards, sauces, butter, or chocolate require gentle heating. At 50% power or lower, you avoid scorching or separating these delicate ingredients.

  4. Preserve Texture
Bread, pastries, and pizza slices can go from soft and chewy to rubbery at full power. Using 20%-30% power allows for a gentler reheat, preserving texture and flavor.

  5. Save Energy
Lower power levels can be more energy-efficient, especially for tasks like melting butter or softening cream cheese.

How to Use the Power Level Button

Using the power level button is simpler than you think:

  1. Enter your desired cooking or reheating time.
  2. Press the Power Level button.
  3. Enter the percentage of power you want (e.g., 5 for 50%, 3 for 30%).
  4. Press start, and let the microwave work its magic.
