Tiny Mystery Under the Sink: What Are These Peculiar Metal Balls? 🤔

When you're settling into a new home, the last thing you expect is a biological or even an inorganic puzzle waiting for you in the most mundane places. But that's exactly what I found!

After thoroughly cleaning out the cabinet under my kitchen sink when I moved in a year ago, I started noticing something bizarre appearing on the cabinet floor: tiny, dark, mostly spherical objects. At first, it was just one or two, but now there are tons of them.

I picked up a few to inspect them closely . They are minuscule, smaller than a sesame seed, and while many are perfectly round, others are more irregularly shaped, like tiny, slightly squashed pebbles.

The Investigation: What We Know

My initial investigation ruled out a few common suspects and offered some intriguing clues:

  • They're Not Organic: My first thought was pest droppings, but a simple test proved otherwise. They do not dissolve when wet, and they have the cold, hard feel of a mineral or metal.

  • They're Likely Metallic: Their density, coupled with the fact that some have a faint reddish-brown patina (like rust), strongly suggests they are made of metal or a metallic compound.

  • The Location is Key: They are exclusively located in the cabinet directly beneath the kitchen sink, which has a garbage disposal and is right next to the dishwasher.

This specific location—a nexus of water flow, grinding mechanisms, and potential corrosion—is the most crucial piece of evidence we have.

Unmasking the Culprit: Two Leading Theories

The combination of tiny, round, metallic objects appearing near a high-traffic plumbing area narrows the possibilities significantly. Here are the two most likely explanations for these mysterious orbs:
