Classic Homemade Lasagna

Instructions

Step 1 — Make the Meat Sauce

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef (and sausage, if using) over medium heat.

  2. Add the diced onion and garlic; sauté until fragrant and softened.

  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.

  4. Simmer on low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 2 — Prepare the Cheese Mixture

  1. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.

Step 3 — Cook the Noodles

  1. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and lay flat on a clean towel to prevent sticking.

Step 4 — Assemble the Lasagna

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the dish.

  3. Place a layer of noodles over the sauce.

  4. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle with 1/3 of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

  5. Add another layer of meat sauce, then noodles, then the remaining ricotta and cheese.

  6. Finish with a final layer of noodles and meat sauce, topping with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.

Step 5 — Bake

  1. Cover with foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray).

  2. Bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 6 — Rest and Serve

  1. Let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing.

  2. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve warm.
