Classic Homemade Lasagna
Instructions
Step 1 — Make the Meat Sauce
-
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef (and sausage, if using) over medium heat.
-
Add the diced onion and garlic; sauté until fragrant and softened.
-
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
-
Simmer on low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 2 — Prepare the Cheese Mixture
-
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
Step 3 — Cook the Noodles
-
Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions. Drain and lay flat on a clean towel to prevent sticking.
Step 4 — Assemble the Lasagna
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the dish.
-
Place a layer of noodles over the sauce.
-
Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, then sprinkle with 1/3 of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
-
Add another layer of meat sauce, then noodles, then the remaining ricotta and cheese.
-
Finish with a final layer of noodles and meat sauce, topping with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
Step 5 — Bake
-
Cover with foil (to prevent sticking, you can spray the foil with cooking spray).
-
Bake for 25 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Step 6 — Rest and Serve
-
Let the lasagna rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing.
-
Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve warm.
