Most of us think mouth problems mean cavities, bad breath, or sore gums. Because of that, small changes inside the mouth are easy to ignore. A tiny sore or spot might not hurt, so it doesn’t seem important. But sometimes these small, painless changes can be early signs of oral cancer.

Oral cancer often starts quietly. It can show up as something that looks minor and feels harmless. That’s why it’s important to notice anything in your mouth that doesn’t go away.

One common warning sign is a sore that won’t heal. If you have a mouth ulcer that lasts longer than two weeks, it should be checked. Normal sores from biting your cheek or eating sharp food usually heal quickly. Long-lasting sores are different.

Look out for unusual patches of color. Bright red areas, white patches, or red-and-white spots inside the mouth can be warning signs. They may feel a bit rough or thicker than the skin around them. Even if they don’t hurt, they shouldn’t be ignored.

A lump or hard spot in the mouth or along the jaw is another sign to watch for. You might also feel like something is stuck in your throat when you swallow.
