Purple Spots on Chicken—Safe to Eat or Not?

When to throw it out 🚫

Discard the chicken if you notice:

  • Strong sour, rotten, or egg-like smell

  • Slimy coating that doesn’t rinse off

  • Green, gray, or rainbow-like sheen

  • Package was bloated before opening

  • It was left at room temp too long while thawing

Extra tip

If the purple area grosses you out, you can:

  • Trim off the discolored part before cooking

  • Or remove the skin entirely

Bottom line

👉 Purple blotches alone = usually safe.
👉 Bad smell or slime = toss it.
