I went to the store and bought some bacon, brought it home to eat. When I opened the package and took a few slices, I found......

What Should You Do?

It goes without saying: do not eat it. Even if the surrounding slices look fine, a localized infection or cyst can affect the quality and safety of the entire package.

  1. Seal it back up: Put the bacon (and the mystery object) back into its original packaging or a Ziploc bag.

  2. Take photos: Document the find, especially the "Use By" date and the establishment number (usually found in the USDA circle on the package).

  3. Return it to the store: Most grocery stores are excellent about providing an immediate refund or exchange for a quality issue like this. They also need to know so they can report the batch to the supplier.

  4. Contact the Manufacturer: Reach out to the brand's customer service. They take these reports seriously as it helps them track issues with their processing plants and quality control inspections.

It’s a frustrating and honestly pretty gross experience to have your meal plans derailed by a discovery like this. While it’s likely just a natural biological fluke that slipped past inspection, it’s a good reminder to always give your groceries a quick "sanity check" before they hit the pan
