The Slow Cooker Hack You Didn't Know You Needed: Cheesy Onion Fries
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Slow Cooker
Generously spray the inside of your slow cooker insert with non-stick cooking spray, or line it with a slow cooker liner. This recipe gets wonderfully cheesy, and you’ll thank yourself later during cleanup.
Step 2: Season and Layer
In a large bowl, toss the frozen crinkle-cut fries with the melted butter, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
Place half of the seasoned fries into the bottom of the slow cooker in an even layer.
Step 3: Add the Aromatics & First Cheese Layer
Scatter half of your finely diced raw onions over the bottom layer of fries. Then, sprinkle 1 cup of the Cheddar cheese and all of the Mozzarella over the onions.
Layer the remaining fries over the cheese, and top with the rest of the diced onions.
Step 4: The "Paper Towel" Trick (Crucial Step!)
Before putting the lid on, place a double layer of paper towels completely across the top of the slow cooker opening, then press the lid firmly down over it.
Why do this? As the frozen fries cook, they release condensation. The paper towel catches that moisture before it can drip back down onto your potatoes, ensuring your cheesy onion fries stay rich and comforting rather than watery.
Step 5: Cook to Perfection
Cook on HIGH for 2.5 to 3 hours. Avoid opening the lid during the first two hours so you don't lose that trapped heat. You'll know it's getting close when the edges look golden-brown and the onions are translucent and fragrant.
Step 6: The Ultimate Cheese Blanket
About 15 minutes before serving, remove the lid and the damp paper towel. Dump the remaining 1 cup of Cheddar cheese across the top layer of fries. Pop the lid back on (no paper towel needed this time) just long enough for the cheese to become a bubbling, molten blanket.
