Horrified man finds something unbelievable in a bag of broccoli
Quick Facts About the Ladder Snake:
Origin: They are native to southwestern Europe, including Portugal, Spain, and southern France, which is likely where the broccoli was harvested.
Venom: They are non-venomous, meaning a bite wouldn't have been lethal.
Behavior: Despite lacking venom, ladder snakes can be quite aggressive when startled, are fully capable of giving a painful bite, and can release a pungent, foul odor when stressed.
A Lucky Escape
While the internet reacted with a mix of horror and dark humor, the situation could have been much worse. Because the snake was wrapped tight and then kept in the cold environment of the fridge, its metabolic rate slowed down, keeping it relatively lethargic and confined.
If the broccoli had been left out on the kitchen counter instead of in the fridge, the snake likely would have warmed up, escaped the plastic, and been loose inside the house.
The supermarket chain issued an official apology, stating that their supplier has robust processes in place to prevent these incredibly rare incidents, and treated it as an isolated anomaly.
How to Clean Your Veggies (Just in Case!)
While the odds of finding a reptile in your dinner are astronomically low, this viral scare is a great reminder to always inspect and clean fresh produce.
Shake it out: Give dense vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, or cabbage a gentle shake over the sink before unwrapping them fully.
The Saltwater Soak: Soaking broccoli upside down in a bowl of cold water with a tablespoon of salt for 5 to 10 minutes will naturally coax out any hidden bugs, slugs, or unwanted organic hitchhikers from the tight florets.
Would you have kept your cool if you found this in your grocery bag, or would you have abandoned the kitchen entirely?
