My Brother Took This!!!

Some people look at the night sky and see peace. My brother Leo looks at it and sees a puzzle.

Leo has spent his entire life tracking weather anomalies, chasing storms, and camping out in the freezing cold just to capture a rare planetary alignment. But last Tuesday night, he didn't have to travel to a mountain peak to find something extraordinary. He just had to look out our back window.

The image sequence he captured, which you can see in the four panels, completely blew our minds.

The Eye in the Atmosphere

It was just after midnight when Leo burst into my room, his hands shaking as he held out his camera screen. He had been shooting a time-lapse of a fast-moving storm front passing over the dense woods behind our house.

"Look at the cloud break," he whispered. "Tell me I'm not crazy."

I looked down at the sequence. As the thick, dark storm clouds parted over the silhouettes of the bare winter trees, the moonlight didn't just illuminate the sky—it formed a stark, hyper-realistic celestial eye staring straight down at the earth.

The glowing white clouds shaped a perfect, luminous sclera and almond-shaped eyelid, while a glowing crescent moon sat positioned exactly where an iris and pupil should be. In the four sequential shots my brother took, you can see the "eye" shifting slightly as the wind whipped the vapors across the moon, making it look as though a massive, cosmic entity was slowly blinking and scanning the forest floor below.
