Angel Chicken: The Creamy, Slow-Cooked Comfort Dinner You'll Make Again and Again

There are some meals that just feel like a warm hug at the end of a long day, and angel chicken is exactly that. Tender pieces of golden-seared chicken nestle into a rich, velvety cream sauce that slow-cooks its way into something truly magical. Served over a bed of soft pasta, every bite is smooth, savory, and deeply satisfying.

This is the kind of recipe that requires very little effort but delivers enormous comfort. The slow cooking process allows all the flavors to meld together beautifully, resulting in a sauce that coats the pasta perfectly and chicken so tender it practically melts. Whether you are feeding your family on a weeknight or hosting a casual dinner, this dish never disappoints.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into large chunks
  • 1 packet (0.7 oz) Italian dressing mix
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 block (8 oz) cream cheese, softened and cubed
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for a gentle kick)
  • 12 oz egg noodles or pasta of your choice, cooked according to package directions
  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish

Method

  1. Season the chicken chunks lightly with black pepper and onion powder. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and sear the chicken pieces on all sides until golden brown. You do not need to cook them all the way through at this point. Set the seared chicken aside.
  2. In your slow cooker, melt the butter on the low setting. Add the minced garlic and let it soften for a couple of minutes, stirring gently so it does not burn.
  3. Add the cream of mushroom soup, softened cream cheese, chicken broth, and Italian dressing mix to the slow cooker. Stir everything together until the mixture is mostly smooth and well combined.
  4. Place the seared chicken pieces into the slow cooker, nestling them into the creamy sauce. Spoon some of the sauce over the top of the chicken so it is nicely coated.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours or on HIGH for 2 to 3 hours. The chicken is ready when it is completely cooked through and the sauce has thickened into a gorgeous, creamy consistency.
  6. About 20 minutes before serving, cook your pasta or egg noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  7. Give the sauce a gentle stir and taste for seasoning. Add a pinch more pepper or red pepper flakes if desired.
  8. Serve the creamy angel chicken over the warm pasta. Spoon plenty of that rich sauce on top and finish with a generous sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley.

Tips for the Best Angel Chicken

Do not skip the searing step. Taking a few minutes to brown the chicken before it goes into the slow cooker adds a depth of flavor and a slight golden crust that makes the dish taste far more restaurant-quality than if you simply tossed the raw chicken straight in.

Make sure your cream cheese is truly softened before adding it to the sauce. Cold cream cheese tends to stay lumpy, whereas room-temperature cream cheese blends into the sauce beautifully and creates that signature silky texture.

If you find the sauce is thicker than you prefer after slow cooking, simply stir in a splash of warm chicken broth until it reaches your ideal consistency. On the other hand, if you want it even thicker, mix one tablespoon of cornstarch with two tablespoons of cold water and stir it into the sauce during the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Serving Suggestions

Angel chicken is incredibly versatile. While egg noodles and pasta are the classic base, it also tastes wonderful served over fluffy white rice, creamy mashed potatoes, or even spooned into a bowl alongside crusty bread for dipping. A simple side salad or some steamed green beans round out the meal nicely and balance the richness of the sauce.

Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat gently on the stovetop with a small splash of chicken broth to loosen the sauce back to its original creamy consistency.
