Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Amish Hamburger Steak Bake: A Hearty, Comforting Dinner Everyone Will Love
Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is the kind of old-fashioned comfort food that turns simple ingredients into a satisfying family dinner. Tender seasoned ground beef patties are browned until beautifully caramelized, then baked in a rich, savory onion gravy until everything is hot, tender, and full of flavor.
This dish is especially appealing on busy evenings because it uses inexpensive pantry staples while still tasting like something that has been simmering in a home kitchen for hours. The combination of juicy hamburger steaks, sweet onions, creamy gravy, and a golden baked finish makes every bite warm and comforting.
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
1 ½ pounds ground beef
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 large egg
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Onion Gravy
2 tablespoons butter
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
½ cup milk or heavy cream
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Optional Topping
½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Mixture
Begin by placing the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add the finely chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce.
Use clean hands or a wooden spoon to gently combine everything. Avoid overmixing the meat because working it too much can make the hamburger steaks dense instead of tender.
The mixture should hold together easily when pressed. If it feels unusually wet, add another tablespoon of breadcrumbs.
Step 2: Shape the Hamburger Steaks
Divide the mixture into about six equal portions. Shape each portion into a thick oval or round patty, roughly ¾-inch thick.
Press the edges gently so the patties hold their shape during cooking. They do not need to look perfect—the rustic appearance is part of the charm of this dish.
Place the shaped patties on a plate while you prepare your skillet.
Step 3: Brown the Patties
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Heat a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of oil if your ground beef is particularly lean.
Place the hamburger steaks in the hot skillet without overcrowding them. Cook for approximately 2–3 minutes per side, just until they develop a deep golden-brown crust.
They do not need to be completely cooked through at this stage because they will finish cooking in the oven.
Transfer the browned patties to a plate and set them aside.
