Chicken Noodle Casserole
Chicken Noodle Casserole: A Creamy, Comforting Family Dinner
Chicken Noodle Casserole is the kind of cozy, dependable meal that brings together tender chicken, hearty noodles, creamy sauce, and a golden, savory topping in one bubbling baking dish. It is easy enough for a weeknight dinner but satisfying enough to serve when family or friends gather around the table.
What makes this casserole especially appealing is its balance of textures. The noodles become tender without turning mushy, the chicken provides plenty of protein, and the creamy sauce ties everything together. A crisp topping adds just enough contrast to keep every bite interesting.
Ingredients
For the Casserole
12 ounces egg noodles
3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or chopped
1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup
1 cup sour cream
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
1 small onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt, to taste
Black pepper, to taste
For the Topping
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed buttery crackers
2 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish
Begin by preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a small amount of butter. Greasing the dish prevents the noodles and creamy sauce from sticking while the casserole bakes.
Set the prepared dish aside while you make the filling.
Step 2: Cook the Egg Noodles
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the egg noodles and cook according to the package directions.
For the best casserole texture, cook the noodles just until they are al dente. They should still have a little firmness in the center because they will continue cooking in the oven.
Once finished, drain the noodles thoroughly. Do not rinse them, as a small amount of surface starch helps the sauce cling to the noodles.
Set the noodles aside.
Step 3: Sauté the Aromatics
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the diced onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.
Be careful not to brown or burn the garlic. The goal is simply to soften it and release its aroma.
