Italian Sub Squares

Italian Sub Squares

Italian Sub Squares are a fun, crowd-friendly twist on the classic Italian deli sandwich. Instead of assembling individual subs, layers of savory meats, melty cheese, crisp vegetables, and Italian-inspired seasonings are tucked between sheets of soft dough and baked until golden and bubbling. The result is a warm, cheesy appetizer or easy meal that can be cut into squares and served straight from the baking dish.

These squares are especially convenient for parties, game days, family dinners, potlucks, or whenever you want the flavors of an Italian sub without making sandwiches one at a time.

Ingredients

For the Sub Squares

  • 2 tubes refrigerated crescent roll dough or refrigerated pizza dough

  • 8 slices deli ham

  • 8 slices salami

  • 8 slices pepperoni

  • 6–8 slices provolone cheese

  • ½ cup sliced banana peppers or pepperoncini, drained

  • ½ cup thinly sliced roasted red peppers, drained

  • ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion

  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

For the Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley

  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, optional

  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese

How to Make Italian Sub Squares

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a small amount of butter. Greasing the dish helps prevent the dough from sticking and makes the finished squares easier to remove.

Set the prepared dish aside while you assemble the layers.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

Open the refrigerated dough and carefully unroll it.

If using crescent roll dough, press the perforated seams together with your fingers to create one solid sheet. Gently stretch the dough until it fits the bottom of the baking dish.

Place one sheet of dough into the bottom of the greased dish. Press it gently into the corners, but try not to stretch it excessively.

Step 3: Add the First Layer of Meat

Begin building the Italian-sub filling over the dough.

Arrange the deli ham in an even layer, slightly overlapping the slices so that the entire surface is covered.

Next, add the salami followed by the pepperoni. Distributing the meats evenly is important because it ensures that every square contains a satisfying combination of flavors.
