It combines seasoned ground beef, creamy cheese, tomatoes, and a soft biscuit-style topping into a warm, satisfying casserole that is easy enough for a weeknight meal.

The beauty of this version is its simplicity. With only five main ingredients, you can put together a comforting dish without filling your kitchen counter with dozens of bowls and seasonings.

What Is John Wayne Casserole?

John Wayne casserole is a classic American-style layered casserole traditionally made with ground beef, vegetables, cheese, a creamy mixture, and a biscuit or dough topping. There are several variations of the recipe, so ingredients can differ from one version to another.

This simplified five-ingredient version focuses on the essential components: ground beef, taco seasoning, diced tomatoes with green chilies, cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, and refrigerated biscuit dough. The result is creamy, savory, cheesy, and slightly spicy, with a golden topping that makes the casserole especially inviting when it comes out of the oven.

Ingredients

For this simplified casserole, you’ll need:

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 packet taco seasoning

  • 1 can diced tomatoes with green chilies, drained

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 1 tube refrigerated biscuit dough

Although this version is often described as a “5-ingredient” casserole, the biscuit dough serves as the base or topping, while the remaining ingredients create the flavorful filling. If you're counting every packaged component, consider it a six-item shopping list.

Step 1: Prepare the Oven and Baking Dish

Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish with cooking spray or a thin coating of oil. A roughly 9-by-13-inch casserole dish works well, although a slightly smaller deep baking dish can also be used.

Preparing the dish first makes assembly much easier later and prevents the casserole from sticking to the bottom.

Step 2: Brown the Ground Beef

Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef.

Cook the beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Continue until it is completely browned and no longer pink.

This usually takes around 7–10 minutes, depending on the size of the skillet and the amount of beef.

Once cooked, carefully drain away excess grease. Removing the extra fat helps keep the finished casserole from becoming overly greasy.

Step 3: Add the Taco Seasoning

Return the drained beef to the skillet and sprinkle in the taco seasoning.

Follow the seasoning packet's directions for the amount of water, if required. Stir everything together until the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the meat.

Allow the beef to simmer for a couple of minutes so the seasoning has time to blend into the meat.

At this stage, the kitchen should already start smelling like a warm, savory taco filling.

Step 4: Prepare the Creamy Mixture

While the beef is cooking, place the softened cream cheese in a mixing bowl.

Add the drained diced tomatoes with green chilies and stir until the ingredients are well combined.

The tomatoes bring acidity and a mild kick, while the cream cheese creates the rich, creamy texture that balances the seasoned beef.

If your cream cheese is still cold and difficult to mix, let it sit at room temperature for several minutes before combining it with the tomatoes.
