Seafood Salad: A Fresh, Flavorful, and Easy Recipe

Seafood salad is a refreshing dish that combines tender seafood, crisp vegetables, fresh herbs, and a creamy, tangy dressing. It is a wonderful choice for warm-weather lunches, family gatherings, picnics, potlucks, or a light dinner when you want something satisfying without preparing a heavy meal. With its delicate seafood flavor and bright, zesty dressing, this salad offers a delicious balance of richness, freshness, and crunch.

One of the best things about homemade seafood salad is its versatility. You can prepare it with imitation crab meat, cooked shrimp, or a combination of your favorite seafood. Celery adds a pleasant crunch, red onion brings a little sharpness, and lemon juice brightens the entire dish. A creamy mayonnaise-based dressing ties everything together, while Dijon mustard and fresh herbs add extra flavor.

This recipe is simple enough for beginners and can be prepared ahead of time, making it a convenient option for busy days or entertaining guests.

How to Make Seafood Salad Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare the seafood

Begin by making sure your seafood is fully cooked and properly chilled. If you are using frozen cooked shrimp, thaw it in the refrigerator or under cold running water according to the package instructions. Drain it thoroughly and pat it dry with paper towels.

Cut the shrimp into bite-sized pieces if they are large. If you are using imitation crab meat, slice it into small pieces or gently pull it apart into thin strands. For real crab meat, carefully check for any remaining shell fragments before adding it to the salad.

Place the prepared seafood in a large mixing bowl.

Helpful tip: Avoid chopping the seafood too finely. Keeping some larger pieces gives the salad a more appealing texture and allows the seafood flavor to stand out.

Step 2: Chop the vegetables

Wash the celery, red bell pepper, and parsley thoroughly. Dice the celery into small pieces so that it provides a crisp texture without overpowering the seafood.

Finely chop the red onion to distribute its flavor evenly throughout the salad. Dice the red bell pepper into small cubes for a touch of sweetness and color.

Chop the parsley and, if using, the fresh dill. These herbs provide a fresh aroma that complements the delicate taste of the seafood.

Add the celery, red onion, red bell pepper, parsley, and dill to the bowl containing the seafood.

Step 3: Prepare the creamy dressing

In a separate small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sour cream or Greek yogurt, Dijon mustard, and lemon juice.

Add the garlic powder and paprika, then season with a little salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Whisk the ingredients until the dressing is smooth and creamy. Taste it and adjust the seasoning as needed. If you prefer a brighter flavor, add a little more lemon juice. If you enjoy a richer salad, add another spoonful of mayonnaise.

The dressing should be flavorful but not overly sharp, allowing the natural taste of the seafood to remain the main focus.

Step 4: Combine the seafood and dressing

Pour the prepared dressing over the seafood and vegetables.

Using a large spoon or spatula, gently fold everything together until the ingredients are evenly coated. Take care not to stir too aggressively, especially if you are using delicate crab meat that can break apart easily.

Check the consistency. If the salad seems too dry, add a small amount of mayonnaise. If it feels too rich, a little extra lemon juice can help balance the flavor.

At this stage, the salad should look creamy, colorful, and evenly mixed.
