Mama’s Cornbread Dressing: A Time-Honored Comfort Dish

THE INGREDIENTS LIST:

1 batch of cornbread (about 8 cups when crumbled).

1 Cup.Of celery, finely chopped.

1 Cup.Of onion, finely chopped.

1 Cup.Of green bell pepper, finely chopped.

1/2 Cup.Of butter.

4 Cups.Of chicken or turkey broth.

2 Tsp.Of dried sage.

1 Tsp.Of dried thyme.

1 Tsp.Of dried rosemary.

1 Tsp.Of dried parsley.

Salt and black pepper, to taste.

2-large eggs, beaten.

Optional: cooked and crumbled sausage or bacon for added flavor

METHOD:

1st Step

Make a batch of cornbread using the instructions from your go-to recipe. After it has cooled, break it up into pieces in a big mixing basin. You should have around 8 cups of cornbread that has been crushed.

2nd Step

Melt the butter in a large skillet set over medium heat. Add the celery, onion, and green bell pepper that has been chopped. For around five to seven minutes, the veggies should be sautéed until they have become tender and aromatic.

3rd Step

In a mixing dish, combine the crumbled cornmeal with the veggies that have been sautéed. To ensure that the veggies are distributed equally, give the mixture a little toss.

4th Step

On top of the combined ingredients, evenly distribute the dried sage, thyme, rosemary, and parsley. Salt and black pepper may be added to taste as a seasoning. The use of these herbs gives the dressing a richer taste as well as a lovely scent.

5th Step

Pour the chicken or turkey stock over the cornmeal mixture in a slow and steady stream. Begin with three cups and add more as necessary to get the appropriate level of wetness. The combination ought to be damp without being gloppy in texture.

6th Step

Add the eggs that have been beaten to the mixture in stages. During the baking process, the eggs assist in holding the dressing together. At this point, you may choose to add crumbled cooked sausage or bacon if you want your dish to have a heartier feel and an additional layer of flavor.

7th Step

After greasing a baking dish measuring 9 by 13 inches, transfer the cornbread mixture to the prepared dish. To ensure an equal baking experience, smooth the top.

8th Step

Prepare your oven by preheating it to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Wrap the dish in aluminum foil, then place it in the oven to bake for approximately half an hour. After that, take off the aluminum foil and continue baking for another 15 to 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and has a tiny crunch to it.

9th Step

Before serving, you should give Mama's Cornbread Dressing a chance to gently chill down. It brings a flavor of the past and a great deal of affection to the table, making it the ideal complement to any of your favorite holiday or comfort foods.
