My Amish buddy showed me the "Poor Man's Steak" recipe. It's really good.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Prepare the Meat Mixture: Start by seasoning the ground beef with salt and pepper, then shaping it into oval-shaped patties, resembling traditional steak cuts. These "steaks" are typically about 1/2 inch thick and should be pressed firmly to hold their shape.

  2. Coat with Flour: In a shallow dish or plate, spread out the all-purpose flour. Lightly dredge each beef patty in the flour, ensuring that they are evenly coated on both sides. This flour coating will help create a golden-brown crust when cooked.

  3. Brown the Steaks: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the coated beef patties to the pan, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on the outside. Remove the steaks from the pan and set aside.

  4. Sauté the Onions: In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and sauté them until they are soft and translucent, about 5-6 minutes. The onions will soak up the flavors left behind from browning the beef patties, adding depth and richness to the dish.

  5. Create the Gravy: Once the onions are cooked, sprinkle any remaining flour from dredging the beef patties over the onions in the skillet. Stir well to incorporate the flour and cook for an additional minute to remove the raw flour taste. Gradually pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. If desired, add a splash of Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor.

  6. Simmer and Serve: Return the browned beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the onion gravy. Reduce the heat to low and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked through and the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency.

  7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Amish Poor Man's Steak hot, spooning generous amounts of onion gravy over the top. This hearty dish pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley or a sprinkle of black pepper for an added touch of flavor.

Whether served for a cozy family dinner or shared at a potluck gathering, the Amish Poor Man's Steak never fails to elicit smiles of satisfaction and requests for seconds. Its hearty flavors and nostalgic appeal make it a timeless classic that continues to bring joy to all who enjoy it!!
