Skillet Steak and Potatoes: A One-Pan Wonder

Method

  1. Prepare the Potatoes:

    • In a large bowl, toss the halved or quartered baby potatoes with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper until well coated.
    • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned potatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Remove the potatoes from the skillet and set aside. Keep them warm.
  2. Prepare the Steak:

    • Pat the steaks dry with paper towels. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
    • In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons of olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until shimmering.
    • Add the steaks to the skillet and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature (135°F for medium-rare, 145°F for medium).
    • During the last minute of cooking, add the minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, and butter to the skillet. Spoon the melted butter and herbs over the steaks to baste them.
    • Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest on a cutting board for 5 minutes.
  3. Combine and Serve:

    • Return the cooked potatoes to the skillet and toss them in the leftover garlic and herb butter from the steaks to reheat and absorb the flavors.
    • Slice the rested steaks against the grain into thin slices.
    • Serve the steak slices alongside the crispy potatoes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

Tips for Perfect Skillet Steak and Potatoes

  • Steak Choice: Ribeye or sirloin are great choices for this recipe due to their tenderness and flavor, but you can use other cuts like New York strip or filet mignon if preferred.
  • Resting the Steak: Allowing the steak to rest after cooking ensures that the juices redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a juicier and more flavorful steak.
  • Potato Variations: You can use different types of potatoes like Yukon Gold or red potatoes. Just ensure they are cut into similar-sized pieces for even cooking.

Versatile and Delicious

Skillet Steak and Potatoes can be customized and adapted to suit different tastes and occasions:

  • Vegetable Additions: Add vegetables like bell peppers, onions, or asparagus to the skillet for a more colorful and nutritious meal.
  • Spice Variations: Experiment with different spices and herbs, such as smoked paprika, cumin, or Italian seasoning, to change the flavor profile.
  • Healthy Options: Use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes for a healthier twist.

While Skillet Steak and Potatoes is an indulgent dish, it also offers nutritional benefits:
