Honey Garlic Ribs: A Sweet and Savory Delight

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ribs:

    • Start by removing the silver skin (membrane) from the back of the ribs. This can be done by using a knife to lift the edge of the membrane and then pulling it off with a paper towel for better grip. Removing the membrane allows the marinade to penetrate the meat more effectively.
  2. Season and Marinate:

    • Season the ribs with salt and pepper. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, and olive oil. Place the ribs in a large resealable plastic bag or a baking dish and pour the marinade over them, making sure they are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). If you prefer to grill, preheat the grill to medium-low heat.
  4. Cook the Ribs:

    • Remove the ribs from the marinade and place them on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil. Reserve the marinade. Cover the ribs with another sheet of aluminum foil to keep them moist during cooking. Bake the ribs in the oven for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until they are tender and the meat is starting to pull away from the bones.
  5. Prepare the Glaze:

    • While the ribs are baking, pour the reserved marinade into a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until it has thickened slightly. This will be used to glaze the ribs.
  6. Glaze and Finish:

    • Once the ribs are tender, remove them from the oven and increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) or preheat the grill to high. Brush the ribs generously with the thickened marinade and return them to the oven or grill. Cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the glaze is caramelized and sticky.
  7. Garnish and Serve:

    • Remove the ribs from the oven or grill and let them rest for a few minutes before slicing. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions for a burst of freshness and added flavor. Serve the ribs hot, with additional glaze on the side if desired.

Tips for Perfect Honey Garlic Ribs

  • Cooking Methods: While baking and grilling are popular methods, these ribs can also be made in a slow cooker. Simply cook on low for 6-7 hours or until tender, then finish under the broiler with the glaze.
  • Marinating Time: For the best flavor, marinate the ribs overnight. However, if you're short on time, even a few hours will impart a good amount of flavor.
  • Serving Suggestions: Serve these ribs with sides like coleslaw, mashed potatoes, or cornbread to complement the sweet and savory flavors.
