Method: How to Make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, milk, crushed crackers, chopped onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently—overworking the meat can make it dense. Shape the mixture into evenly sized oval patties, similar to traditional hamburger steaks.
Step 2: Brown the Patties
Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it. Brown the patties on both sides just until they develop color. They don’t need to cook through at this stage—this step adds flavor and helps them hold together during baking. Set aside.
Step 3: Assemble the Casserole
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish.
Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly across the bottom of the dish. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Add half of the sliced onions on top. Arrange the browned hamburger steaks over the onion layer. Finish with the remaining potatoes and onions.
Step 4: Make the Creamy Gravy
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Pour this mixture evenly over the entire casserole, making sure the liquid seeps down through the layers.
Step 5: Bake Low and Slow
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 20–30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is lightly golden.
Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before serving—this helps everything set and makes serving easier.
Serving Suggestions
This bake is hearty enough to stand alone, but it pairs beautifully with:
Buttered green beans
Stewed apples or applesauce
Fresh homemade bread
Simple garden salad
Leftovers reheat exceptionally well and often taste even better the next day.
