Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Brown the Meat
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375∘F or 400∘F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper for easier cleanup.
Cook Meat: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, combine the ground beef and hot sausage. Cook, breaking up the meat into small, consistent crumbles until thoroughly browned and no pink remains (about 8 minutes).
Drain Grease: Carefully tilt the skillet and drain off the excess fat/grease. This is crucial for preventing a greasy final dish.
Step 2: Create the Cheesy Mixture
Add Cheese & Seasoning: Return the skillet to low heat. Stir in the cubed processed cheese, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, and garlic powder (or garlic salt).
Melt and Combine: Continue stirring gently until the cheese is completely melted and smoothly combined with the meat mixture. It should form a creamy, cohesive topping.
Step 3: Assemble and Bake
Prep Bread: Lay the slices of party rye or pumpernickel bread in a single layer on your prepared baking sheet.
Top: Using a tablespoon or a small cookie scoop, place a heaping mound of the cheesy meat mixture onto the center of each slice of bread. Spread it gently toward the edges.
Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 15 minutes (depending on your oven temperature). The goal is for the bread to be lightly toasted or crisp, and the topping to be warmed through and bubbling.
Serve: Remove from the oven, optionally garnish with chopped parsley or green onion, and serve warm.
❄️ Make-Ahead and Freezing Tips
Hanky Panky Bites are an excellent make-ahead appetizer!
Assembly: Assemble the bites as directed, but do not bake them.
Flash Freeze: Place the unbaked bites in a single layer on a baking sheet and transfer to the freezer for 2 to 3 hours, until solid.
Store: Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight container or resealable freezer bag, where they can be stored for up to one month.
Cook from Frozen: When ready to serve, place the frozen bites on a baking sheet and bake at 350∘F for about 20–25 minutes, or until warmed through.
