Purple Spots on Chicken—Safe to Eat or Not?

What it usually is 👍

  • Bruising or blood pooling from processing (called hematomas)

  • Shows up as purple, blue, or dark red spots

  • Especially noticeable after thawing
➡️ This does NOT automatically mean spoiled.

How to decide if it’s safe

Keep it if ALL of these are true:

  • Smells neutral or mildly “raw chicken” (no sour/rotten odor)

  • Texture is normal (not slimy or sticky)

  • Color is pink/white aside from the purple areas

  • It was stored and thawed properly (fridge thawing, not left out)

You can cook it normally. The discoloration may fade when cooked.
