Warning: those who ignore it will pay 12 years of bad luck

Mark had known raising a child would be a challenge, but he was starting to suspect he might need heavy-duty construction equipment rather than just regular diapers. His six-month-old daughter, Lily, was growing at an exponential rate. When she was born, she had been a perfectly normal size, but over the last few weeks, she had developed a truly astonishing amount of rolls upon rolls.

Her pediatrician had been stumped, running every test in the book, only to conclude that she was "the picture of health, just exceptionally… substantial." Her growth was defying all known medical logic.

Every night, Mark and his wife, Sarah, would gaze at her with a mix of awe and bewilderment. Sarah had started tracking Lily’s weight not in pounds, but in comparison to small household appliances. "She's officially heavier than the microwave!" she’d announce with a nervous chuckle.

Mark was the one who usually got her to sleep. He prided himself on his physical strength, but lifting Lily was becoming a serious workout. This particular evening, as he prepared for the bedtime routine, he felt a slight tweak in his back. He braced himself, ready to hoist her for the mandatory rock-and-bounce session.
