Homemade Cheese Bread: A Warm, Cheesy Delight

Method

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This ensures your yeast is active and ready to work its magic.

Step 2: Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, milk, and melted butter. Mix until the dough starts to come together.

If you’re using a stand mixer, knead the dough on low speed for about 7-8 minutes. If kneading by hand, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 3: Add the Cheese

Flatten the dough slightly and sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over it. Add the garlic powder and fresh herbs if desired. Knead the dough gently to incorporate the cheese, being careful not to let it clump in one spot.

Step 4: Let the Dough Rise

Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 5: Shape the Loaf

Punch down the risen dough to release the air. Shape it into a loaf or your desired form (you can also make rolls or braided bread). Place it in a greased loaf pan or on a lined baking sheet.

Step 6: Final Rise

Cover the shaped dough and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes. It should puff up slightly.

Step 7: Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

Step 8: Cool and Serve

Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack. Slice and serve warm for the best experience.

Tips for Perfect Cheese Bread

  1. Use High-Quality Cheese: The better the cheese, the richer the flavor. Cheddar, mozzarella, and gouda are all excellent choices.
  2. Avoid Overstuffing: While it’s tempting to load up on cheese, too much can make the dough difficult to bake evenly.
  3. Experiment with Add-Ins: Try adding cooked bacon bits, caramelized onions, or diced jalapeños for extra flavor.
  4. Don’t Skip the Rising Time: Allowing the dough to rise properly ensures a fluffy texture.
  5. Brush with Butter: For an extra golden crust, brush the top with melted butter before baking.
