  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and pepper.

  2. Add the milk and egg, stirring until a smooth, thick batter forms.

  3. Fold in the sliced onions, making sure every piece is well-coated.

  4. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  5. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, forming small fritters.

  6. Cook until golden brown, then flip and brown the other side.

  7. Remove from the skillet and drain on paper towels.

  8. Serve warm—plain or paired with your favorite dipping sauce.
