Step 1: Preheat & Prep
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Generously butter a baking dish.
Step 2: Crinkle the Phyllo
Take one sheet of phyllo at a time, gently scrunch it accordion-style, and place it into the dish. Continue until the dish is full.
Step 3: Butter & Bake
Brush melted butter generously over the crinkled phyllo. Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden and crisp.
Step 4: Make the Custard
While baking, whisk together milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
Step 5: Pour & Bake Again
Remove the cake from the oven and slowly pour the custard evenly over the hot phyllo. Return to the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, until custard is set.
Step 6: Cool & Serve
Let cool slightly before slicing. The cake will firm up as it rests.
